    African Investigative Journalism Conference at Wits in November

    Wits Journalism's Investigative Journalism Workshop hosts the African Investigative Journalism Conference, which forms part of the Global Investigative Journalism Network.

    At the event, African journalists can develop their skills from the expert knowledge of 40 speakers, across 60 sessions. The conference has something for everyone, be it tracing money, mapping or data visualisation, telling better stories or learning more about media law.

    Highlights


    • Jock McCulloch, author of South Africa's Gold Mines and the Politics of Silicosis, on the spin that mining companies put on the ill health of miners.
    • The Financial Times' former West Africa correspondent Tom Burgis on Spies, oil and diamonds - and China's middleman in Africa.
    • Also from West Africa, Rafael Marques de Morais from the anti-corruption watchdog Maka Angola will present the Carlos Cardoso Memorial Lecture on Freedom of Expression.
    • Brant Houston, Knight Chair in Investigative and Enterprise Reporting, University of Illinois, will present on Reporting Ebola using maps and data.
    • Anya Schriffin will talk about her new book Global Muckraking - 100 years of investigative journalism from around the world

    New courses this year include making innovative documentaries for the web to be presented by French filmmaker Arnaud Dressen, while forensic accountant Raj Bairoliya will present a course on understanding company accounts for investigative journalists. Using social media for investigations, and its legal risks, will also feature.
