I have always loved drawing, or doodling should i say. In high school I started art class and got my first real taste exploring my creativity. I experimented with oil paint, charcoal, pastel and different coloured papers, cardboards and canvas.
After finishing school I studied Fine Art at Techikon Pretoria
My first real job was at a web design company, and here I got my basic training as to what websites are all about, how they work, how to build them and most important, how to design it so that I can build it. In other words, beginning with the end in mind. After a good few years of designing and building websites, using gif-animation and Flash, e-mailers and newsletters, I moved into the world of print.
It was daunting at first, it was a complete shift from what I was used to, I was terrified. I took on the challenge and then all those terms I learned back in Theory of Reproduction Process at Tech all came drifting back, registration, CMYK, proofs, paper quality and all that! Once I understood the process, I enjoyed it and I was back to loving what I did.
After 14 years of playing around with website design, html, animation and then print, and now SEO, social media and mobile design, I have come a long way, and the learning continues everyday. Design has progressed and evolved so much since, that now...design is everywhere, from being a nice to have, it's has become a necessity. Most businesses are still cautious about entering the social and mobile world, merely because they don't understand how it works and how powerful it can be once you have it in your grasp. Technology is progressing so quickly that if you don't grab on now, you will be left behind. Taking that first step is daunting, but the rewards are worth it!
Somode came about by us wanting to give a small to medium business the opportunity to have a little of everything in the social, mobile and design space, at a reasonable cost.
Design is fundamental to all businesses and should be a part of your marketing plan from the beginning, we aim to make that possible no matter the size of your business or your budget.
