Show profile Hide profileMy work career started while I studied fulltime. I worked at a sunglass store in Liberty Midlands Mall, Pietermaritzburg, so retail was my first taste of marketing and helped develop my understanding of the consumer. This experience played a major role in my final achievement of graduating top of my honours class with 4 certificates of merit in my finals.
The retail store I worked for were very customer care focused, with us winning numerous customer care awards and even winning overall customer care of the year in 2006. This was run by the PCB, Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business so it was rather prestigous and an achievement I am proud to have been apart of.
I studied at UKZN Pietermaritzburg where I did a BCom Honours degree majoring in marketing. In my final year of Honours, I was awarded a full bursary by Telkom SA Ltd so as soon as I qualified I was posted at their local Telkom Direct Mall in Liberty Midlands Mall Pietermaritzburg. This was a short lived job as soon I was offered a job at my current employer, Belgotex Floorcoverings (Belgotex).
Belgotex is a carpet manufacturer and floor covering distributor. They manufacture residential and commercial carpet which is sold both locally and internationally, and manuafcture artificial grass for both leisure and sport. The company saw the opportunity in the flooring market and diversified by importing various other floor coverings such as laminates, cushion vinyl, LVT, homogenous vinyl, rubber flooring and sports vinyl.
My career at Belgotex started off modestly in 2007 with me being employed as the Marketing Assistant to the board of directors. My role was to assist the board with any admin related duties as well as to generate various reports from our sales stats and present it in a manner that was easy to interpret. It was during this time that I excelled by generating various reports that still today are spoken about and even referenced to.
I was soon given more responsibility in 2008 when I was asked to apply my marketing qualification to a newly acquired brand Berry Floor. This was the stepping stone to my career today. In 2009 I was asked to run the marketing department after the previous manager left. I was promoted to marketing co ordinator that year and was now responsible for the marketing of all brands and product offerings.
In 2010 I was promoted to marketing manager. In 3 years I have reduced our spend on sampling through in housing the process and acquiring new suppliers. This was achieved by employing 2 staff members, a graphic designer and a marketing assistant and it has proved to be more successful that originally thought as it has allowed the company to in house more below the line work further reducing costs.
Key responsibilities:
- Conceptualize and write marketing strategies
- Product launches
- Budget management and expenditure reporting
- Brand management
- Media placement management
- Social and digital media management
- Local and international trade and retail assistance
