Show profile Hide profileMy name is Joshua Craig White and I am currently freelancing as a Lifestyle and Travel Writer. I seek permanent employment as a writer of print and digital content in these same fields, as well as that of Arts & Culture.
I have steadily built up a portfolio of work, which includes theatre reviews for 'Period Seven', one of my high school's publications; articles for 'The Weekender', a former lifestyle newspaper; a poem entitled 'Black Cat', published in the anthology 'Carapace'; and a creative essay entitled 'T.S. and I', based on my experiences with Tourette's Syndrome, published in 'English Alive'.
While at Rhodes University, I wrote several articles for the campus newspaper 'The Oppidan Press', mostly covering aspects of the institution's cultural environment, highlighting artistic projects as well as extramural activities and events. Work published outside of Rhodes includes reviews written at the 2015 Durban International Film Festival, and an autobiographical poem entitled 'Coffee in a French Press, made by my stepbrother', which I wrote for the online literary journal 'Type/Cast'.
My studies at Rhodes University also helped me hone my abilities as a wordsmith. Due to my academic endeavours, particularly my Master's dissertation, I have learnt to ensure that my written work is properly structured, thoroughly researched and unambiguous.
After leaving university, I interned at the digital publishing solutions provider, Snapplify, to which I applied because of my interest in the output of published content via digital media. Part of my duties here was writing newsletters that promoted books made available on Snapplify's various apps. I then interned as a copywriter at the digital advertising agency Hellocomputer, where I wrote and edited website content and advertorial copy. Both these internships helped me improve upon my ability to write tersely and persuasively for consumers.
In August 2016, I began work as a Digital Content Creator at Highbury Media, writing blog and social media content for the online lifestyle platforms www.capetownetc.com and www.wedding-album.co.za, as well as their respective companion magazines, 'Cape Etc.' and 'Wedding Album.' Here I gained substantial experience as a lifestyle writer and social media content creator, and familiarised myself with Wordpress and the basics of on-page SEO.
After finishing at Highbury Media, I freelanced for two months, writing articles for the lifestyle magazines 'Balanced Life' and 'Fit Life', before joining Lauren Shantall Integrated Communications . Here, I wrote press releases, newsletters, blog posts and social media content for numerous clients in the lifestyle, design and business sectors. I was also able to write an article for 'VISI' on 100% Design South Africa's Featured Designer for 2017.
During my time at Lauren Shantall Integrated Communications I was allowed to continue freelancing outside of working hours, and used this opportunity to write for 'Balanced Life' and the travel magazine 'Escapes'. I am now a regular contributor to the latter publication, but would like to move into a more stable work environment and expand my portfolio and skillset.
