×Show profile Hide profileI'm a sound engineer with 6 years sound- radio production. I completed my diploma at the Academy Of Sound Engineering and graduated in 2012. I specialized in Broadcasting Technology where I learnt digital production, radio production including theory on how to run live radio shows. I also learnt sound design using the world recognized audio software- Pro Tools. I learnt to create radio advertisements, radio jingles and also learnt production for radio dramas.
I worked for Radio Channel Africa(SABC) where I began as an experiential leaner, progressed to freelance then I was hired on a permanent basis. Channel Africa is a station that broadcasts via shortwave, satellite and internet. It is an international radio station that broadcasts in 6 different languages.
My job purpose was described as following:
To support the broadcast and recording of high quality programmes to ensure the optimal technical quality of all programmes on air and my key perfomance indicators were as follows:
Set up audio balance and line-up of audio equipment and testing of support equipment in line with SOP
Monitor sound quality during recording/broadcast to ensure compliance with broadcast standards
Maintain and configure audio equipment in accordance with customer/client requirements and broadcast standards
De- rig and dismantle infrastructure post production
Confirm alignment of programming to ensure that necessary resources/facilities are in place
Correct switching/routing of lines on customers/clients requests to comply with broadcast standards
Transmit material as per the schedule
Set up broadcast infrastructure (e.g. lines) in accordance with contribution and distribution needs
Identify equipment/line deficiencies on time and report to Technician for technical assistance/repair
Identify risks and introduce measures to mitigate those risks
Identify technical production requirements in line with customer/client directive
Document all communication with clients/customers to ensure well
co-ordinated broadcast/production (Communication/Planning)
Gather and disseminate important information to key stakeholders/production team to ensure well-co-ordinated production/broadcast
Report faults accurately in accordance with SABC procedures to prevent re-occurrence
Make follow-up on outstanding matters pertaining to the schedule and notify customers/clients.
Identify production requirements (in line with script) and set up/plan resources accordingly.
Knowledge:
Experience in implementing outside broadcast and caretaking of radio broadcast studios.
Knowledge & understanding of broadcast standards, Policy and SOP
Advanced understanding of SABC broadcast operations
Good understanding of equipment & facilities within broadcasting environment
Knowledge & understanding of different audio platforms e.g. ISDN, ATM & Communication Circuits
Knowledge & understanding of transmission chain
Knowledge & understanding of different types of productions e.g. drama versus sport versus current affairs.
