Show profile Hide profileWHY GOSPEL MUSIC?
The penetration of missionaries in South Africa many centuries had a profound influence on South African musical styles. In the late 1 800s African composers such as John Knox Bokwe began composing hymns that drew on traditional Xhosa harmonic patterns. In1897, Enach Sontonga, then a teacher, composed the hymn Nkosi Sikelele iAfrika (God Bless Africa), which was later adapted by the liberation movement and ultimately became the National Anthem of a democratic South Africa.
The missionary influence, plus the later influence of American spirituals, spurred a gospel movement that is still very strong in Africa today. Drawing on the traditions of South Africa, it has exponents whose styles range the more traditional to the pop-infused sounds of, former pop singer Rebecca Malope, the "Queen of Gospel".
Gospel in its many forms is one of the bets- selling genres in South Africa today, with artists who regularly achieve sales of gold and platinum status.
We believe that out of all the genres of music in South Africa Gospel music has a deep cultural, spiritual and traditional influence over the people of South Africa. This influence is similar because it carries the same message of hope, love and peace that has the same meaning in all languages, across all races, and nationalities of this beautiful land. Gospel music can be used as a unifying tool in order to bridge racial divides and create a spirit of unity in South Africa.
The power and influence of Gospel music is most evident when South Africans unite in signing the National Anthem in big and small gatherings and sporting events. There is power in Gospel music as an art form. This power unifies all people of South Africa from a child to the oldest citizen of this country. Through the Gospel Xtreme Talent Search TV Show national talent search and development project we aim to harness the power of Gospel and use it as a positive influence over South Africa.
